Bertrand want Chelsea first-team role

Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand is aiming to establish himself in the Blues first team this season.

The Champions League holders open their Premier League campaign on Sunday away to Wigan, and despite being second-choice on the left behind Ashley Cole, Bertrand is keen to make an impact.

"I played 15 games last season, so if I get 20-25 games it will show progress."

Bertrand praised Cole, his rival for the left-back spot, and said that playing with the England international has been a great help for his development.

He added: "He's is one of the best left-backs in the world.

"We have a good relationship. He's more than happy for me to play more games and pushes me on."

The Blues made Roberto Di Matteo their full-time manager this summer after he led them to European glory, and the 23-year-old believes it will be of great benefit to the side as they enter the new campaign.

Bertrand said: "His appointment is fantastic for me - to have that same consistency with a manager.

"I'm still a left-back, but I'm more than happy to fill any position where the team needs me."

Bertrand made his debut for England as a 78th minute substitute against Italy on Wednesday, having also made four appearances for Great Britain during the Olympics.
