4 die and 21 vehicles destroyed in Awka accidents

Four persons died yesterday in multiple accidents on Enugu-Onitsha expressway near UNIZIK junction in Awka, Anambra State. A commercial motorcyclist, a hawker and a child beggar as well as one other whose identity cannot be ascertained were killed in the accident while several people sustained injuries.


A truck with registration number, Benue XD 230 MKD conveying goods under military escort to Onitsha, according to a witness, had a brake failure and ran into several vehicles. Over 21 vehicles consisting of private cars and commercial buses were badly damaged during the incident.

The development led to traffic jam with motorists spending several man-hours, while the commotion lasted.
Officials of Federal Road Safety Corps rescued the victims and took them to the hospital.
A corps official blamed the accident which happened around 4:10 pm on over speeding by the truck.
